Class action litigation requires strategic, nuanced representation based on a depth of experience and judgment.
Laura Cooper is Chair of the Ontario Litigation Group and Co-Chair of the firm’s Class Actions practice group. She has extensive experience in class action litigation, with particular emphasis on securities, competition, consumer and privacy class actions.
Laura acts regularly for internationally known corporations in the defence of significant class actions. Many of her cases have cross-border and international implications and Laura works closely with counsel in the U.S. and other jurisdictions to ensure strategic co-ordination of cases across borders. Laura also regularly acts as national co-ordinating counsel in respect of Canadian multi-jurisdictional class actions.
Laura has particular expertise in securities class actions, defending corporations and others against allegations of misrepresentation in the market. She also has extensive experience in competition class actions, having represented clients in competition class actions with respect to electronic components (including SRAM, DRAM, LCD, CRT, ODD and LiB), foreign exchange products, a variety of auto parts and chemicals, among others. Laura also represents clients in respect of a variety of other class action areas including privacy, consumer remedies and employment.
Laura’s expertise has been recognized by Chambers Canada and Chambers Global Lexpert and Legal 500 and she has repeatedly been named one of the “Top 25 Women Litigators in Canada” by Benchmark Litigation. In 2013 Laura was a recipient of the Lexpert Zenith Award celebrating leading women lawyers.
As Chair of Fasken’s Ontario Litigation Group, Laura leads the litigation team in Toronto and Ottawa. She is also a member of the firm-wide Litigation Management Team and is Co-Chair of the firm’s class action practice group and Chair of the Ontario Pro Bono program.
Laura is a frequent speaker on topics related to class actions, competition and securities. She has taught class actions as an Adjunct Professor at Queen’s Law School and for many years taught advocacy skills at programs presented by The Advocate’s Society. Laura is a member of the Steering Committee for Northwind’s biannual Class Actions Invitational Forum.
